It’s that time of the year again when we break down Medscape’s LPN salary report for 2024. Medscape invited nurses to participate in a 10-minute online survey between March 20th, 2024 to May 15th, 2024. The nurses were required to be licensed in the U.S. and the sample size for Licensed Practical Nurses ended up being 1,433 RNs. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Salary Report 2024
Licensed Practical Nurse Compensation:
Below is the breakdown from Medscape’s results including both LPN gross income and income after taxes.
- Base: $56,000
- Total Compensation: $59,000
Based off the 2023 report, we can see that there has been an increase in LPN salary by $4,000. The LPNs who participated in this survey reported that the average base salary increased to $56,000 and their total compensation increased to $59,000.
Pay Differences Between Male and Female Licensed Practical Nurses:

- Female: $58,000
- Male: $66,000
Since the healthcare industry is majority females, typically males are offered more money for the same position. The gender pay gap still persists, even in the healthcare industry. Since the 2023 report, the gender pay gap for LPNs has actually increased. In 2023 the report resulted in a $6,000 difference between male LPNs and female LPNs. As we can see, the 2024 report resulted in a $8,000 gender pay gap for LPNs. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women are paid an average of 83.7% as much as men which amounts to a difference of almost $10,000 per year.
Which Regions do LPNs Make the Most?

- East North Central: $61,000
- Mid-Atlantic: $57,000
- West North Central: $57,000
- West South Central: $57,000
- South Atlantic: $56,000
The average salary for LPNs based on regions has been quite mixed up from the 2023 salary report results. In 2023, the East North Central region was paid the least but in 2024, it is the second highest paid region. The South Atlantic region was the 4th highest paid region in 2023 but dropped to the lowest paid region. The Mid-Atlantic region also dropped from the 2nd highest paid region to the 3rd highest paid region.
Which Work Setting Do LPNs Make the Most?
- LPN Incomes per setting
- Skilled nursing facility/Long term care: $64,000
- Hospital-based outpatient setting or clinic: $61,000
- Non-hospital based medical office/urgent care clinic: $56,000
- School/college health: $42,000
- Other: $62,000
This year, Medscape has listed two new categories for work settings for LPNs, school/college health and other. Skilled nursing facilities and long term care work settings for LPNs are still seeing the highest salaries. Those who work in SNF and LTC facilities have seen a $4,000 increase. In the 2024 results we see that LPN salaries for those who work in hospital-based outpatient settings or clinics is now the second highest paid. Their salary has increased from 2023 by $10,000.
Do LPNs Make More in a Non-Union or Union Setting?
- Union: $61,000
- Non-union: $59,000
Working for a union facility usually results in receiving higher salaries. From 2023 we can see that union LPNs saw an increase of $3,000 and non-union LPNs saw an increase of $4,000.
Licensed Practical Nurse Income By Years of Practice:
- 6 – 10 years: $57,000
- 11 – 20 years: $59,000
- 21 years+ : $60,000
In any industry you can expect to make more money with more experience. However, according to Medscape’s survey results, the difference in salary from an LPN with 6-10 years of experience to those with 21+ years of experience is only $3,000.
