How Does A Staffing Agency Work?

how staffing agency works

Most people who currently have jobs, or are currently jobless have the same question: how does a staffing agency work? It’s not as complex or as scary as people think it is. Staffing companies WANT to find you a job. You see, staffing companies have clients that pay them for placements. They may get a certain percentage of a permanent placement in the company, or they may charge a markup for each hour worked if they are a temp agency. Companies end up paying staffing agencies because they only want to see the best of the best candidates and not have to go through all the trouble of finding them. It’s up to the staffing agency to vet each candidate. This usually entails phone interviews, meeting them, and having them conduct pre-employment tests. If the recruiter feels like a certain person would be a great candidate for their client’s job opening, then they submit them. It is up to the client if they want to interview the candidate from the recruiter.

There are many different types of staffing agencies and recruitment firms. Horizon has many different branches. We have an admin staffing / temp agency division, healthcare division, financial services executive search group, and a home care division. Each branch has different functions and different job candidates that they try to reach. I will be going over how each one works.

Before we get into the different types of staffing agencies I want to address a question that a lot of candidates might have:

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A STAFFING AGENCY’S SERVICES IF YOU ARE A JOB SEEKER.

There is a common misconception that if you are a job seeker, that you have to pay us in order to be placed at a job, or that we get a cut of the salary that you make. WRONG. We only charge the client (company looking to fill a position) for our services. Staffing agencies NEED job seekers to fill open positions. Again, we do not charge job seekers for our services.

Healthcare Staffing Agency

Horizon Healthcare Staffing is our healthcare staffing division. We have a nursing department, rehab therapy department, paraprofessional department, and an allied health department. Our nursing dept. includes finding Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Certified Nursing Assistants jobs. We place them in a variety of settings. These settings include: schools, hospitals, corporate offices, insurance companies, home care, long term care settings, or private practices. We are always looking for school nurses to work in our various New York City Department of Education school districts and our Long Island school districts.

Our rehab therapy department includes Occupational Therapists, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, and Speech Therapists. These therapists can work in nursing homes, long term care facilities, in the home, private practices, in the school, or hospitals. We are always searching for the brightest and best therapists for our clients.

Allied Health professionals include medical assistants, OR techs, radiology professionals, lab professionals, physical assistants, respiratory therapists, or social workers.

Most of our healthcare positions are on a per diem basis. Per diem means that you are filling in, usually on a short term basis. We may look to call nurses last minute to try to fill a position that opened up just for the day or we may ask them to provide coverage for a week, two weeks, or months. Healthcare Staffing moves at a rapid pace, and it’s vital to keep up! We may have permanent placements – which means you will work at a specific company on a permanent basis. There are full time positions, and part time positions.

Admin / Temp Staffing Agency

Horizon Staffing Solutions is our New York temp staffing agency and Horizon Staffing Resources is our New Jersey temp staffing agency. They both recruit for similar positions, just in different geographic regions. Temp staffing has a lot of turnover / fast turnaround. Most of our clients just look for candidates for a finite amount of time. Jobs may last a week, two weeks, 3 months or maybe longer. Most of our clients call us for different administrative roles. Job openings may include a bookkeeper, customer services rep, warehouse associate, accounting professional, office support, data entry, receptionist, medical biller, medical coder, along with others. If a candidate gets a job, they can’t take it personally when the assignment ends. Most of the positions that are available have an end date in mind.

Financial Services Executive Search

The Horizon Group is our financial services executive search division. This division mostly places individuals on a permanent basis. This divisions does a lot more head hunting than the other divisions. Their clients include corporate and investment banks, trading companies, technology companies, asset management companies, or accounting firms. Our clients give us specific candidates that they are looking for, and it’s our responsibility to find them, even if it’s a needle in a haystack – it’s our job to make our client happy! The financial service industry is a big industry with many different professionals. We vet out only the best candidates in the space.

Home Care Agency

Homecare Therapies is our home care division. This is where we find nurses, rehabilitation therapist, or home health aides to work in the home of our patients. Since all services are being performed in the home, it’s of the utmost importance that we find the best candidates. Patients expect the best care, and that’s what they get when they employ us as their home care agency. In home care provides an ideal solution for those who want to maintain their independence but need aid assistance due to short or long term disability, illness or simply, the natural aging process. Our goal at Homecare Therapies is to provide our clients and families the independence and peace of mind that can only come from knowing that you have a competent and caring professional caregiver.

So what should you take away from all this? If you are jobseeker, you don’t have to pay. If you are a client, we have all the resources to find you the best candidates. This is how a staffing agency works. We would love your feedback in the comments below.
