Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Salary Report 2024
Medscape has released their APRN Compensation Report for 2024 and we are going to summarize their findings in this blog! For the 2024 salary report for APRNs, there has been an increase in pay ranging on average from a 7% increase up to an 18% increase. Medscape’s methodology included a 10-minute online survey for U.S. practicing nurses. This survey resulted in 2,987 APRNs (1,788 Nurse Practitioners, 439 Certified Nurse Specialists, 445 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and 315 Nurse Midwives).

Below is the breakdown by specialty from Medscape, before and after taxes.
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Salary Compensation:
- APN, Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)
- Base: $211,000
- Total Compensation: $256,000
- APN, Nurse Practitioner (NP)
- Base: $132,000
- Total Compensation: $135,000
- APN, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

According to Medscape’s results, the difference in total salaries between a Nurse Anesthetist and a Nurse Midwife is $128,000. With these results, we can conclude that the average salary (before taxes) for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses is around $161,750 and after taxes is an average of $145,000 after taxes. Since our last post regarding the APRN salary report in 2023, the average salary of APRNs has risen by $11,750. Nurse Anesthetist is still the highest paying registered nursing specialty, and their salaries have raised by $21,000.

According to Medscape’s survey results, hourly APRNS make $26,000 more per year. This is due to hourly nurses having more opportunities by being able to work overtime, earn overtime pay, and track their hours. This year’s compensation report shows that the wage gap between hourly vs salary APRNs has increased from a $15,000 difference to a $26,000 difference.

Medscape’s survey resulted in seeing a $62,000 difference in pay between male and female APRNs. On average, male APRNs are earning $203,000 a year and female APRNs are earning $141,000 per year. When it comes to CRNA’s, males are earning $278,000 on average and females are earning $248,000. That is a $30,000 difference in yearly pay.

Since the last APRN salary report, the average income by region has switched up quite a bit. While the Pacific region has stayed at the highest paying region, we’re now seeing with this year’s survey results that the New England region has soared up to the 2nd most paying region. The Pacific region has a reported increase of $11,000. On the other hand, we can also conclude that the West North Central regions’ average salary has fallen from 3rd in 2023 down to 8th in the 2024 results. The average salary increase amongst all regions has resulted in $9,444.
APRN Income by Work Setting:
- Hospital – inpatient care: $184,000
- Hospital-based outpatient setting or clinic: $145,000
- Non-hospital based medical office/urgent care clinic: $133,000
- Public health setting/community health setting: $122,000
- Other: $145,000
Just like most healthcare professions, working in a hospital setting is the highest paying work setting. The difference between working in a hospital inpatient setting as an APRN and a public health setting is $62,000.

Since the 2023 survey and report from Medscape, there has been an increase in salaries. While APRNs with a master’s degree has seen an increase of $8,000, those who have a doctoral degree are seeing an increase of $15,000 since 2023. The wage gap has now increased from a $5,000 difference to a $12,000 difference.
APRN Income by Union vs Non-Union:

In Medscape’s 2024 survey results, there has been quite a switch up in APRN income by union vs non-union positions. While last year’s survey resulted in union APRNs making more money, this year’s survey has resulted in the opposite. We can draw the conclusion that non-union APRNs are making about $2,000 more per year.
APRN Income by Years of Practice:
- 6 – 10 years: $138,000
- 11 – 20 years: $152,000
- More than 21 years: $154,000
APRN’s workplace advancement sees seniority as more important than performance just as many other industries. Once an APRN reaches 21+ years of practice, their salary raises to $154,000 per year.
