Not only does continuing nursing education benefit nurses themselves, but they’re also benefiting their patients, coworkers, and even their employers. In this blog we’ll dive into the topic regarding the benefits of continuing nursing education.

The Benefits of Continuing Nursing Education

  1. Career Advancement Opportunities

Continuing education can give you the opportunity to pursue a specialty, move into leadership roles, or both! By continuing your education, you’ll be paving the way for different career advancement opportunities in nursing. Nurses that hold advanced certifications or degrees are more than likely offered leadership positions such as a charge nurse, nurse manager, director of nursing, or chief nursing officer.

Continuing education is not only aimed at those who want to enter leadership positions but also for those who want to be in a particular specialty.  RNs can expand their education and specialize in areas that make them become a school nurse, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetist, oncology nurse, and so much more. Many of these leadership and specialty roles come along with higher salaries.

When it comes to nursing, it’s all about patient care and everything is revolved around patient care. Nurses who continue education have a direct impact on patient care improvement. Improvement in patient care and reduction of errors are some of the main agendas behind the formulation of continuing education courses. The healthcare industry is always evolving and changing. By staying informed and educated, nurses can provide more effective and evidence-based care.

That is why it is important not only for nurses but any healthcare professional to continue their education throughout their career. Continuing education ensures that you stay ahead of these changes and allows you to adapt to these changes quickly. This is particularly valuable for nurses in NJ and nurses in NY, working in very busy and fast-paced environments.

RNs and LPNs in New Jersey must also include 1 hour on prescription opioid drugs, alternatives to opioids for managing and treating pain and the risks of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.

Whereas RNs in New York must complete coursework or training in Infection Control at initial licensure and every four years thereafter. In addition, there is a one-time requirement of 2 hours in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting. LPNs in New York must complete course work or training in Infection Control at initial licensure and every four years thereafter.

  1. Strengthens Clinical Skills

Continuing education consolidates your clinical skills, from the mastery of new tools to fine tuning bedside manners. These CE classes allow nurses to gain a deeper understanding of their skills and knowledge resulting in practicing higher quality care for patients. Not only do they enhance clinical skills, but these programs also impact your decision-making skills and help build self-confidence. The more confident you are in your job, the better results you’ll have. These skills are very important to develop, especially in areas such as New Jersey and New York, where patients present diversity in terms of their needs.
