Although many HHAs complete a minimum 75 hour training course, many forget that in order to keep their certificate up to date they must be supervised by a nurse and must receive 12 hours of in service training a year. If you have not worked for a home care agency or hospice for a consecutive twenty-four (24) months you are ineligible for employment with an agency. In order for a home health aide to reinstate her eligibility for employment, they must retake the training class. In 2009 the Department of Health, in an ongoing effort to ensure HHAs have been properly trained, created the Home Care Registry. So remember to be truthful when asked if your certificate is up to date and that you have received in-service because now it is being tracked.
